It was time to shift back into hard core training, with the Galveston 70.3 race coming up in April it was time for me to refocus.
I have to admit, I had not practiced my swimming since early December 2019. The swim wasn’t something I looked forward to. In fact, it’s rare to meet an Ironman who looks forward to the swim, at least that is my perspective.
During March I put a huge focus on cycling, not only was I signed up for the Galveston 70.3 Ironman race, but I was also planning to ride in the Texas MS150. This is a yearly charity ride starting from Houston and a new ending at Texas AM college station, roughly 150-180 miles on your bike over 2days.

About mid-March Houston, Texas started shutting down all group gatherings, races ect. the last race I participated in was the minute-maid 5k which took place on my birthday.
Even though group gatherings shut down and several local races canceled, I was still training for a full Ironman for Sept 2020. It was during this time I had to learn to train alone. No group runs, no group bike rides… all solo.
In order to train solo, I recommend you create a schedule and stick to it. It’s easy for something to come up and steal your time, ultimately derailing your training so stick to your plan…!
I highly advise letting your family and friends know what your training for. This will help them understand what’s taking all your time. Best case, your family members or friends will be there to cheer you on at your big event and encourage you throughout this process.
